Top research universities don't out-invent HBCUs — they out-commercialize them, with technology-transfer offices, company builders, and capital networks that turn faculty disclosures into licensed startups. That recurring, largely non-dilutive revenue funds research, scholarships, and faculty. HBCUs have always had the disclosures. They have rarely had the engine.
Ernest Everett Just was a brilliant biologist whose experimental work on fertilization and cell development influenced a generation of researchers — achieved largely outside the institutional support, funding, and recognition that his contemporaries at better-resourced, predominantly white institutions took for granted. His career is a reminder of how much excellent science has gone under-capitalized simply because of where, and by whom, it was done.
We carry his name to carry that lesson forward. "Just" is also our thesis: the returns of commercialized research — equity, royalties, capacity — should flow back to the institutions and inventors who created the underlying value. Not just the R1s who have always had the machinery to claim it.
Everything starts with a non-binding, no-cost exploratory agreement. Title stays with the university. Nothing is licensed until a specific agreement, for a specific technology, is negotiated and approved by the institution. Every company needs the university's signature. The relationship can end at any time — we built it that way on purpose.
